I recently got my copy of Battlefield Bad Company and I thought I would share my thoughts. I haven’t finished this game yet but I am close enough. I played Battlefield 2 back on the original Xbox and enjoyed the multiplayer but not really the single player. Now with BF:BC we now have single player with multiplayer. Another interesting thing here is the Frostbite engine which lets you destroy 90% of everything you see. But to me the hallmark has always been multiplayer and with Call of Duty 4 at the top of the mountain how would BF:BC do?
Graphics: To me these graphics are alright. I am able to forgive it because of the destructability, that’s a lot of weight to bear on a engine and this game gives does hold up. There are some minor glitches but I didn’t find it too painful. One big issue I found is why can’t I destroy a building? I can destroy the walls and roofs and everything but why doesn’t the building fall down? And why is it when I really want to blow something up it doesn’t even get a scratch? If you are going to give me a taste, I want the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy making my own doors.
Single-Player: As I’ve said before, single player has always played second fiddle to the multiplayer. In BF:BC the campaign is actually alright. The story actually made me care and it was alright for a shooter. However I had some big issues. Really big issues. For one, the lack of co-op, seriously games like that really need to start including it. You want to set yourself apart and get more sells? Include co-op sometime. A reason this was a bigger gripe here was the lack of your teammates doing anything. Seriously out of 100 people I saw, my teammates killed one. Seriously it was bad. Another big issue was the enemy AI. One second they are easy to kill, the next thing they have sniper shotguns, sniper tanks that hit me ten miles away, and helicopters that don’t die no matter what I throw at them. And while I’m on it, who came up with the vehicles controls? LT for gas? That’s horrible, and why does the vehicles handle like crap?
Multiplayer: This is what BF has always done right. Well maybe not this time. I like the Gold Rush gametype, it’s alright and it’s fun to play. You even get to destroy buildings as well. My problem is the weapon choices, vehicle control, and of course knifing. For one in single-player there are 78 (estimate) different weapons and even different vehicles. In MP you get about 20 (vehicles and weapons combined), and there is really no variety. It’s really stripped down and you can’t customize it like you can in COD4. I will say the gadgets are alright and a welcome addition. And why is MP vehicles different to control than when they were in singleplayer? It’s even worse. Then there’s the knifing, if you are going to encourage me to knife someone, don’t make it nearly impossible.
Overall: I wanted to like this game, I really did and I tried to. But deep down there were too many damn issues. I feel that the destrucability was a welcome addition and I hope they will take it farther. But deep down, way too many issues here.
Likes and dislikes:
+ Destrucability
+ Gold Rush gametype
+ A decent single player
- Game AI
- Vehicle controls
- Lack of weapons & customiziation in MP
Score: 83% (8.3 or B-) worth a rental if you like shooters.
